Metropolitan Transport Corporation Limited

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd has a rich history stemming from the nationalization of passenger transport in 1947. Initially, 30 buses were introduced in Madras City, operated alongside buses run by private operators. This marked the commencement of the Madras State Transport Department’s control over the operation.

History

In 1972, a significant transformation occurred, shifting from a departmental setup to a commercial approach while maintaining social responsibilities. Pallavan Transport Corporation Limited was established under the Companies Act 1956 by the Government of Tamil Nadu on 01.01.1972, beginning with a fleet strength of 1029 buses.

Subsequently, the fleet strength increased to meet public demands, reaching 2332 buses by 01.01.1994. The corporation was bifurcated into Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation Limited and Pallavan Transport Corporation Limited on 19.01.1994. Operational jurisdictions were defined, with the south of Chennai Metropolitan city under Pallavan Transport Corporation and the north, including EVR Periyar Road, under Dr. Ambedkar Transport Corporation.

These divisions were eventually amalgamated into a unified corporation named Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) Ltd on 10-01-2001.
